Things of interest show up under your happiness (under your name) in the upper left of the screen.  Pay attention to these.  They will tell you when to feed the dog, collect water, choose a theme event, when events and tournaments start, new items, etc.  The other thing to watch for is orange exclamation marks on buttons.  They indicate something to pay attention to.
